Razor Clamming

Last sunday, a bunch of us drove 3 hours to Copalis Beach, WA to do razor clamming. Now, it's isn't an event you can do everyday as there's regulation when and where you can dig, etc... Now none of us have done this before and i borrowed 3 clam guns from a fellow colleague.

Off we go to the cold ocean beach

See the number of people digging for clams along the beach. Yeah, it was rather windy and strong waves

That's me pulling hard at the clam gun. The tool sucks the surrounding water too and you need to do it very fast. The clams "run" very fast.

Our loot. We got 68 clams in all, and didn't hit our limit of 90. We reached there rather late and by 6pm, it's was all dark and cold, making it hard to continue digging.

Give the clam a quick soak in hot water to pop the shell

See how big each razor clams are. The full size of a palm

And you need lots of chefs to help cook the feast and tons of people to eat too..

We had fried clams, clam chowder, clam pasta.. Super yummy and delicious.

It was definitely a fun experience digging and eating the razor clams. Washing and cleaning the clams was tough work as there's so much sand to wash off. And also, need to cut and clean off the gut and stomach. And most errie was that the clam is still alive after the scalding. Imagine cutting a moving clam.. eeewww

But it's worth it for the sweet yummy clams, which tasted a little like calamari. We should definitely do it again next year. Maybe try digging manila clams or crabs too..
